Eric Dane, the acclaimed actor best known for his roles in “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Euphoria,” is in the news again. This time, his name is making waves for an extremely opposite reason. In a frank interview with Diane Sawyer on ABC’s “Good Morning America” in June, Dane spoke candidly about his fight with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This rare progressive neurological disorder has upended his life. We had just gone through this diagnosis in April. Today, he uses his platform like never before to advocate for a cure while dealing with the cruel realities of the disease.
During our interview, Dane opened up about the struggles he’s facing and his journey thus far. He explained that he’s experienced significant loss of function in his right arm. His main concerns were that his left hand and legs would be next, as symptoms were moving down his body. He stated, “I feel like maybe a couple — [a] few more months, and I won’t have my left hand [functioning] either.” His frank and deeply personal testimony demonstrated the urgency of his plight and the need for greater public understanding and research into ALS.
Aside from riding bullet bikes Dane is a passionate advocate for ALS. He’s enrolled in a clinical trial and receiving other medications in hopes of slowing the progression of the disease. Even amidst these setbacks, he has no plans to shy away from pressing forward in the fight against the disease. “I’m going to go to war as much as I can,” he promised throughout the talk.
Dane’s commitment to raising awareness continued with a recent Instagram video in partnership with I AM ALS, a patient-led movement based in Washington, D.C. In the video, he identified himself not just as an actor but as a father and a person living with ALS. He highlighted the pressing need for disruption in ALS research. For more than a century, ALS has been an incurable disease, and we’re through with living with that,” he announced. We want the quickest route to an out and out cure.
Although Dane was scheduled to present alongside Jesse Williams at the 77th annual Emmy Awards, he was notably absent from the event. Here he is at the “Countdown” Premiere & After-Party on June 18, 2025, in Los Angeles. This event reinforced his strong commitment to fans and supporters shown throughout the campaign.
Now, as the father of two young children, Dane’s experience navigating this challenging period highlights the value of familial and communal support. He’s all-too-happy to share his story. We hope this personal testament will go a long way to encourage others who are fighting these same fights.
