In the past year, more than 600 individuals have successfully acquired new skills through Wiltshire Council's Family and Community Learning (FACL) courses. These programs aim to support adults in overcoming barriers to formal education by equipping them with essential skills such as English language proficiency, budgeting, child support, and overall well-being enhancement. The initiative has shown remarkable success, with 99% of participants achieving their course objectives and 80% moving on to further education, employment, volunteering, or other positive endeavors.
The FACL courses are designed to help learners gain confidence and realize their potential. Councillor Laura Mayes emphasized the transformative power of these programs, stating that they "help people gain confidence and realise potential." Additionally, she highlighted the broader benefits of the courses, noting that "gaining knowledge and new skills can open doors and opportunities and it can also help with health and wellbeing and confidence."
A recent annual report indicated that 605 individuals had enrolled in the FACL courses in 2024. With a focus on adults for whom formal learning might present a challenge, these courses cover a diverse range of topics. Participants reported making positive lifestyle changes and feeling more confident as a result of the program.
Maria Barandalla-Fernandez serves as a testament to the success of the FACL courses. After four-and-a-half years as a stay-at-home mother, she felt uncertain about re-entering the workforce. However, the course provided her with the necessary skills and confidence to secure a position as a kitchen assistant in a local school.
"I need to rebuild my confidence as I know I am good at many things and hopefully I will get a chance to show it again," said Ms. Barandalla-Fernandez.
She expressed her gratitude for the support she received from FACL, acknowledging the challenges of balancing work and family needs.
"It has been challenging for me to go back into work trying to balance my family needs, but I am really grateful for receiving the support from FACL," she stated.
"All the team from admins to tutors have been very supportive and encouraging in achieving my objective," Ms. Barandalla-Fernandez added.
These stories of personal growth highlight the effectiveness of the FACL initiatives. By focusing on practical skills and personal development, Wiltshire Council continues to make significant strides in supporting adults who face educational barriers.
