Embracing Freedom: British Naturism Opens Sunfolk as a Clothing-Free Retreat

This five-acre outer clothing-free zone for naturists is only an hour from central London. This serene location would ideally act as a sanctuary, encouraging people to connect with their authentic, wild side. Sunfolk has a super cool post-World War II aesthetic. Its mature woodlands, uniquely landscaped lawns, and Squirrel Run Brook combine to form a most inspiring and meditative setting.

This naturist retreat had a huge turnout for opening ceremony, with many more naturists ready to take in all this unusual space had to offer. The president of British Naturism, Mark Bass, welcomed delegates, and spoke of a new-found community spirit developing amongst naturists. The group has added hundreds of new, younger members. According to a recent survey, 14% of UK adults said they were naturists or nudists, which indicates a significant and historic increase in recent years.

Amenities on board at Sunfolk facilities dotted with options ranging from bunk state rooms to shared cabins to individual cabins. For an enhanced adventure experience, guests can choose glamping pods starting from £80 per night or tent camping pitches from £35. The site presents wonderful opportunities for recreation and relaxation. You can relax in the hot tub, use the sauna, swim in the heated pool, or replenish in outdoor showers.

The Rise of Naturism in Modern Society

The modern naturist movement originated in Europe around the late 1800s. Yet it came into its greatest popularity in the 1920s and 1930s. Since these normalizations, societal attitudes toward body image and public nudity have continued to change. In turn, British Naturism is working to bring younger members on board. According to a 2021 survey commissioned by the organization, there was a 47% rise in naturism among UK adults. The share increased from 2% in 2000 to 14% in 2022.

This development follows the World Health Organization’s recent declaration of loneliness as a global priority. By focusing on community and self-acceptance, naturism helps to balance out these societal pressures. According to Stéphane Deschênes, a naturist advocate, “Naturism is about liberating your body and accepting who you are.” He continued to explain the ways in which positive naturist spaces can be incredibly affirming. As he noted, “If you have no d**khead clothing, it’s hard to be a d**khead.”

Naturism celebrates body diversity, and that is what makes it beautiful and so downright sexy. It creates an incredibly powerful sense of community and belonging among its practitioners. Chris Mason, another Sunfolk warden, noted a sense of body positivity from the Generation Z campers. He sounded hopeful notes for the future of naturism and linguism – building safe spaces where all people can be their authentic selves.

A Community-Centered Experience

Sunfolk was intentionally built around the idea of communal living. The property includes a shared kitchen, an honesty bar, and a campfire circle where residents can come together and enjoy each other’s company. British Naturism runs a program of daily activities during the week, fostering connections between members and creating a feeling of community.

Mark Bass highlighted the importance of maintaining safe spaces for naturists: “We want to be protecting naturist spaces and providing opportunities for people to try naturism.” He understood the need to be inclusive in the community building efforts. He highlighted the importance of addressing inequities related to gender equity, race, and age.

Barefoot and free, young naturist Saoirse Newhouse hopes more people will discover this way of life. She stated, “I really encourage everybody to at least try looking into naturism,” emphasizing personal comfort and exploration. At Sunfolk, the spirit of supporting your neighbors is evident. Visitors frequently mention the unspoken code that “everyone’s got your back,” contributing to an understanding that everyone has the responsibility to help keep it safe for everyone.

Looking Ahead

As British Naturism surges, leaders inside and outside of British Naturism stay pointed toward the future. Mark Bass reflected on the current state of naturism: “If we think about where we are now, we see very similar things,” pointing out that while challenges exist, opportunities for growth abound.

The opening of Sunfolk isn’t just a milestone for Aldo and Bel, it represents an important step toward expanding the naturist movement in the UK. It’s all about community, acceptance, and body positivity. Experienced naturists are in good company, as are those new to naturism or trying it for the first time.
