Madeline and her husband Jim embarked on a transformative journey in 2019, relocating from the United States to the vibrant city of Valencia, Spain. With only two suitcases and their beloved dogs in tow, the couple sought a new chapter filled with adventure and cultural immersion. The move marked the beginning of an extraordinary experience, despite unforeseen challenges that lay ahead. Tragically, two years into their Spanish sojourn, Jim was diagnosed with terminal cancer. However, the couple's dream lived on through Madeline's determination and resilience.
Spain offered Madeline and Jim a lifestyle they both cherished, characterized by a slower pace and a "live and let live attitude." Valencia's welcoming community provided a sense of belonging, with Madeline forming close friendships with locals, including a younger Spanish couple with two children. This supportive network played a crucial role in helping her navigate life after Jim's passing.
The couple's decision to move to Spain was influenced by various factors, including the ease of accessing medical treatment. Madeline noted that Jim's treatment would have been "much more expensive" in the United States. Spain's healthcare system provided state-of-the-art care that was both accessible and affordable, allowing them to focus on making the most of their time together.
During their time in Spain, Madeline and Jim immersed themselves in the local culture, traveling extensively and learning Spanish. Although initially hesitant, they eventually embraced the expat community, forming numerous friendships that enriched their experience. These connections proved invaluable as Madeline had to manage "business stuff" in Spanish by herself following Jim's death.
Despite the distance from her children in the United States, Madeline found solace in Spain. Her children were supportive of her decision to move abroad, although she did miss them deeply. Her daughter expressed interest in joining her mother in Spain one day, a prospect that Madeline welcomes with open arms.
Reflecting on her first Christmas without Jim, Madeline shared poignant memories of how she spent the holiday season.
“In many ways, that was the best possible way I could have spent that Christmas,” – Madeline
This time was marked by meaningful interactions with young people in Spain who held Jim in high regard.
“Talking to young people in a developing country to whom he was very important. That was really wonderful. So, in a weird way, I have some very good memories of that Christmas.” – Madeline
After Jim passed away in December, Madeline moved into their new home in March.
“He died in December, and I moved in in March” – Madeline
This transition marked a new chapter for her as she continued to embrace life in Spain.
Madeline kept Jim’s death private for some time.
“I really hadn’t mentioned it to anybody around that he’d died,” – Madeline
Her ability to manage life independently brought her newfound confidence.
“Because I was able to manage, and it gave me a lot of confidence for going ahead here alone. Or sort of alone” – Madeline
The logistical ease of reaching Spain from the East Coast compared to visiting family on the West Coast also reinforced her commitment to stay. Initially, the couple considered other countries like Germany, South America, and Portugal before settling on Spain as their ideal destination.
Madeline appreciated the medical advantages offered by Spain compared to the United States. The quality care Jim received reaffirmed their choice to relocate. Her gratitude for this aspect of their journey was profound.
As Madeline looks to the future without Jim by her side, her resolve remains steadfast.
“Well, we’ll just have to see what happens” – Madeline
She has no intention of returning to the United States and remains committed to living out the dream they once shared.
