Elliot Page, the Academy Award-nominated star of Netflix’s “The Umbrella Academy,” recently posted an empowering bathroom selfie on Instagram. He was accompanied by Julia Shiplett in the sweet farewell post. This moment comes just as Page himself is stepping into his authentic self. Since coming out as transgender in December 2020, he’s been very public about his journey.
Since his transition, Page has been open about his former relationships. In fact, he has written in detail about how these programs, including his time studying abroad, changed his life. In his memoir, he gets candid about his romances with co-stars and close friends like Kate Mara and Olivia Thirlby. He speaks openly about his marriage to Emma Portner, which lasted from 2018 until the two quietly separated in January 2021.
They expressed:
“After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce following our separation last summer. We have the utmost respect for each other and remain close friends.”
Authentic evolution
Page’s reflections on relationships and self-compassion go hand in hand with a sense of rebirth he’s felt since coming out as transgender. He opened up about how his journey to be himself has brought him to life. This is the first time he has felt this authenticity. Even more, this statement captures the bliss he feels every day as he continues this voyage into a new and exciting life.
Pride Month is coming up soon—are you ready for it? Vicky Nguyen, NPR Page is taking advantage of this moment to process personal developments and to further establish himself as an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. He has received significant media attention for his candid discussions around his past experiences with dysphoria. He implores us to be joyous — in the flesh and in our queerness.
