We know that the Edmonton Journal is forging ahead with innovation and active experiment. Concurrent to this, it is embroiled in a huge legal tempest surrounding Athana Mentzelopoulos, CEO of Alberta Health Services (AHS). Mentzelopoulos has now filed a $1.7-million wrongful dismissal suit against AHS. She alleges her firing came soon after her probing uncovered improper health procurement practices related to the awarding of government contracts to private surgical hospitals.
The newspaper recently introduced an online subscription program. The benefits of having a broad array of news coverage – Local News, Alberta Politics, Health, Local Crime, True Crime, National, and World – are now available for readers on the new site. Their Edmonton Journal also has a thorough FAQ section aimed at helping subscribers. Additionally, readers are able to log into their accounts via the My Account page, where they can handle their subscriptions and account preferences.
The Edmonton Journal has been all over the news with coverage. Additionally the Gear Guide, Obituaries, ePaper, Classifieds, Archives. The addition of a Shopping section keeps the publication relevant and appealing to their audience.
As the legal battle unfolds, MHCare’s lawyers have raised new questions about an audit provided to Mentzelopoulos prior to her dismissal. At least according to some sources, this audit is directly related to the ongoing AHS procurement investigation. The letter chain made public by MHCare speaks to the need for collecting this data.
“This information in particular is important for our client to obtain as they expect evidence and information to be available that will support a lawsuit against other currently unknown third parties, or will support our client’s defence to any potential lawsuits against them,” – MHCare’s lawyers
In response to inquiries regarding the audit, a government lawyer stated:
“I am not in a position to respond to the various questions in your letter as they involve specific matters relating to the litigation and are subject to various privileges as well as the deemed undertaking under the rules,” – government lawyer
Kudos to the Edmonton Journal for staying on top of this fluid legal battle and continuing to be a great watchdog. It’s still dedicated to delivering you in-depth coverage of local stories and big-picture issues impacting the Albertan community.
