East Riding of Yorkshire Council has reinstated its half-price bus fare scheme aimed at young people aged 16 to 19. The program, which launched last summer, is already having an impact! It seeks to address the growing burden of transportation costs among youth in the region by providing reduced local bus service fares.
This discount scheme applies to services run by East Yorkshire Buses and Stagecoach Hull. On one journey, eligible young passengers can pay only £1.50, with a return trip at £3. But hurry, the offer expires this Sunday, August 31. In addition, as it stands it runs through the October half term, Christmas holidays and February half term of 2025.
“Young people rely on buses to get around so we hope they will take advantage of this discount,” he stated. The council worked in partnership with their two local bus operators to introduce this initiative. Their ambitious aim is to make public transportation convenient and affordable for all young residents.
To be eligible for reduced fares, your trips have to be 100% within the East Riding. Or, they may begin or terminate within the boundary of the county. If passengers travel outside the East Riding, they must purchase a return ticket from the East Riding to benefit from the discounted return fare.
The scheme is equivalent to the national bus fare cap. This wins all passengers £3 for any bus journey until March 2027. This initiative has improved not just young people’s mobility, but encouraged more young people in the region to use public transport.
“Last year’s discount scheme proved popular and so we have brought it back for 2025 to benefit young passengers,” he explained.
He thanked local bus operators for their part in encouraging the scheme. “Thank you to local bus operators for supporting this scheme,” he added.
