Duke of Kent Celebrates Milestone Birthday Amidst Family Loss

The Duke of Kent, the same Prince Edward whose 90th birthday was being marked recently. This historic achievement is unsurprisingly marred by the sadness that follows the recent death of his cherished wife, Katharine Worsley, the Duchess of Kent. The Duchess, as she was known, died at the age of 92. Her life continues to have a deep influence on her family and the charitable causes that she fought so selflessly for.

Cancel that cake order. Because of the pandemic, Prince Edward, the Queen’s first cousin, celebrated a low-key birthday with touching tributes from his family. The King and Queen shared their wishes on social media, stating, “Wishing The Duke of Kent a very happy birthday – 90 today! Later this month, The King will host a birthday reception for the Duke, who was Queen Elizabeth II’s first cousin, at Windsor Castle.”

In a written statement, she expressed her deepest sympathy to the Kent family for their tragic loss. It’s no surprise then that she is said to have a particularly close bond with the Duke of Kent. The Prince and Princess of Wales sharing their thoughts about the Duchess’s legacy. We shared our best wishes today for The Duke of Kent and his family, particularly George, Helen and Nicholas. In the years to come, the Duchess would work diligently to serve others and advocated for numerous causes, including using her passion for music. She’s going to be a very long thinged member of the family…

In August, the Duke of Kent made his last official visit before the death of his wife, Duchess Katharine. He then very happily awarded the coveted Duke of Kent medal to Mr. James Malcolmson of The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards Regimental Association. After his funeral, his first public appearance was in a meeting with King Charles.

While the Duke has, in recent years, greatly reduced his public engagements, the Duke is still not formally retired. This second birthday without him is both a time of celebration for his life and a terrible reminder of the loss he has experienced. He is consoled during this difficult time by his three children—George, Helen and Nicholas—all of whom have been stalwart supporters of their father.

As the royal family prepares to celebrate the Duke’s 90th birthday at Windsor Castle later this month, they reflect on the significant contributions made by both him and the late Duchess. Their legacy of service and dedication to a multitude of charitable endeavors will surely be missed and remembered fondly by many.
