Duchess Sophie of Edinburgh recently delighted attendees at a charity event in Camberley, Surrey, showcasing her musical talents while spreading festive cheer. The outing featured various activities, including a drumming session, biscuit decorating, and Christmas tree decoration, all aimed at supporting the Disability Initiative, a charity close to the Duchess’s heart.
Sophie impressed the audience as she joined in with an interactive drumming circle. Her great rhythm and extraordinary musical abilities were definitely on display! She’s been active in the charity from early on in her life as a royal. This started soon after she had married Prince Edward in 1999. The Duchess continues to make frequent visits to the Disability Initiative which is virtually on her doorstep at Bagshot Park. During each visit, she deepens her resolve to fight for people with disabilities.
In 2001, Sophie cut the ribbon on the new Disability Initiative Resource Centre in Camberley. Two years later, in 2005, she was made patron of the charity. Since that day, she’s been a crucial pillar of the organization, regularly interacting with staff and beneficiaries.
Sophie was in high spirits on our recent holiday adventure. She did a lot of cool stuff like decorate Christmas trees and lead biscuit decorating workshops. Lucy Brown, Chief Executive of Disability Initiative, commended the Duchess for her remarkable dedication and engagement.
“The Duchess understands the importance of a proper support network with specialist input.” – Lucy Brown, Chief Executive of Disability Initiative
Brown said the drumming session ended up being one of the best parts of the day. Here, she saw Sophie’s innate musicality shining through, as well as her exuberance when doing the task.
“The Duchess was absolutely brilliant, her rhythm was outstanding. There was a point where everyone had to close their eyes and feel the rhythm, and she was a natural, she’s really musical.” – Lucy Brown, Chief Executive of Disability Initiative
Brown concluded by thanking the Duchess for attending the event.
“It was a really brilliant session and one of the things we did today that was really special was we were able to thank everyone for all the support they give us – from the president and the trustees to all the volunteers that come on in on a day-to-day basis and impart their skills and expertise, so it was lovely.” – Lucy Brown, Chief Executive of Disability Initiative
