…after a long and fruitful collaboration, today at age 37 tennis legends Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray have mutually agreed to separate. This rift occurs only two weeks before 2025 French Open kicks off. The break follows a productive six-month partnership, in which Djokovic reportedly approached Murray for advice on how to improve his off-court image. The choice comes on the heels of one of Djokovic’s worst stretches, marked by injury and early upsets in majors.
Djokovic, the all-time leader with 24 men’s Grand Slam singles titles, brought Murray on board in November 2024. Murray is a three-time Grand Slam champion and was once ranked the world’s No. But prior to joining Djokovic’s team, he had no coaching experience. Their collaboration intended to capitalize on Murray’s knowledge of the high-level competition, but it has been a time of both great fortune and grave disappointment.
The timing of the split is peculiar, to say the least. The 2025 French Open should be no different, kicking off May 25 at Roland Garros in Paris. Djokovic’s recent performance has been concerning. He retired during his semifinal match against Alexander Zverev at the Australian Open due to injury and suffered losses in his first matches at subsequent tournaments before parting ways with Murray.
“Thank you, coach Andy, for all the hard work, fun and support over last six months on and off the court, really enjoyed deepening our friendship together.” – Novak Djokovic
As Djokovic and Murray spent more time together, they rekindled the relationship which blossomed while they were rivals on tour. Their collective story has featured epic battles such as the 2012 US Open decider and the 2013 Wimbledon final, which Murray won. As often happens in tennis’ hyper-competitive world and as life’s recent cruel twists would prove, this too could not hold the pair together.
Murray, too, recognized how special an opportunity he was afforded with Djokovic thanking him for the ride.
“I wish Novak all the best for the rest of the season,” – Andy Murray
As both players prepare for the upcoming challenges of the tennis season, the focus will shift to how Djokovic adapts without Murray’s support and whether he can reclaim his spot among the top competitors in the lead-up to the French Open.
