This decision to limit drone operations is intended to remove all instances where a “hostile” drone could be confused with a non-hostile drone. The upcoming European Council meeting will bring top European leaders to Copenhagen to discuss vital defense issues and the situation in Ukraine. In the aftermath of this summit, a European Political Community meeting is scheduled to happen in the city. In response to these incidents, Denmark has asked Germany for help in strengthening airspace security. The German government has agreed to provide “Counter-small Unmanned Aircraft Systems,” which utilize radar, optical, and acoustic technology to detect drones.
The German air defense frigate, FSG Hamburg, arrived in Copenhagen. It will provide additional airspace surveillance coverage during the course of the EU summits. Further, in response to this significant new drone environment, France has committed a temporary joint task force to Denmark.
Ukrainian military forces have come to Denmark to further their education on countering aerial threats. This decision encroaches on plaintiffs’ First Amendment rights even as security measures are ramping up to meet these challenges. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine commented on this collaboration, stating, “Participants will carry out practical tasks, exchange knowledge and experience, improve their training levels, and enhance their capabilities to counter aerial threats.”
Troels Lund Poulsen, Denmark’s Minister of Defense, emphasized the importance of ensuring optimal working conditions for armed forces and police during the EU summit. He stated, “We are currently in a difficult security situation, and we must ensure the best possible working conditions for the armed forces and the police when they are responsible for security during the EU summit.”
The Danish authorities’ increased attention occurs amid a worsening climate across Europe. In her remarks, Prime Minister Frederiksen emphasized the larger point about these threats. “We can at least conclude that there is primarily one country that poses a threat to Europe’s security – and that is Russia,” she remarked.
The current security situation in the Baltic Sea region warrants alarm. After incidents involving mysterious drone flights in Denmark, NATO has strengthened its defense posture.
