Danish Royals to Attend Invictus Games: A Tribute to Service and Sacrifice

Prince Joachim and Princess Marie of Denmark are set to make their debut at the Invictus Games in Whistler, Canada, from February 8 to February 16, 2024. This event marks the first time the Games will feature winter sports, offering a unique experience for participants and spectators alike. The royal couple, accompanied by their children, Count Henrik and Countess Athena, will arrive on February 15, just a day before the closing ceremony.

The connection between Prince Joachim and the Invictus Games dates back to 2017 when he met Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, in Copenhagen. During this visit, Prince Harry met with the family of Morten Krogh Jensen, a Danish soldier who tragically lost his life in the Helmand Province. The encounter deeply moved Prince Joachim, as it underscored the significance of honoring the sacrifices made by servicemen and women.

"As I was waiting to board the plane, the coffin of a Danish soldier was loaded on by his friends," – Prince Joachim

"Once on the flight, I was confronted with three British soldiers, all in induced comas, with missing limbs, and wrapped in plastic. The way I viewed service and sacrifice changed forever." – Prince Joachim

These experiences played a part in inspiring Prince Harry to establish the Invictus Games, a testament to the enduring spirit and resilience of wounded, injured, and sick servicemen and women. Prince Joachim expressed that Morten's death was "not in vain," highlighting how the Games have become a symbol of hope and recovery.

The Danish royal family recently relocated to the United States in 2023 when Prince Joachim assumed the role of Defence Industry Attaché at the Danish embassy. They purchased a home estimated at €3.4 million after selling their previous residence in Klampenborg. While this marks their first attendance at the Invictus Games, Prince Joachim has always been closely connected to military service. He shares two other children, Count Nikolai and Count Felix, with his ex-wife Princess Alexandra. Count Nikolai is currently studying at the University of Technology Sydney, while Felix attends the Royal Danish Military Academy.

The Danish Palace confirmed their attendance at the Games, which serves as a significant event for both the royals and participants. The Invictus Games not only provide a platform for camaraderie and competition but also emphasize healing and rehabilitation through sports.
