The Danish royal family is poised to embark on another chapter of their storied maritime tradition. King Frederik and Queen Mary recently announced their upcoming travel plans, marking a new sailing season with the Royal Yacht Dannebrog. This iconic vessel, commissioned between 1931 and 1932 at the naval dockyard in Copenhagen, has long been associated with the royal family's summer cruises, a tradition dating back to King Christian IX's reign in the late 1800s.
The Royal Yacht Dannebrog, which replaced an 1879 paddle steamer of the same name, has been a witness to many of the royal family's milestones over the past year. Notably, King Frederik and Queen Mary carried out their first state visits to Sweden and Norway. Last June, they toured Greenland with their 14-year-old twins, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.
In August 2024, King Frederik and Queen Mary embarked on the first summer cruise of their reign. They traveled to Danish municipalities including Bornholmes, Ærø, Assens, and Vejle, marking their inaugural journey aboard the Royal Yacht Dannebrog on 7 May. This voyage signaled a new era in their royal duties, as they continue to uphold the time-honored tradition of summer cruising.
Their Majesties' trip to the Faroe Islands was postponed last year due to workers' strikes. However, it has now been rescheduled for this year, adding to their extensive itinerary. The royal couple plans a late summer cruise from 25 to 28 August. The voyage will commence at Frederikshavn Municipality on the island of Jutland and will make stops at Thisted Municipality on 26 August and Læsø Municipality on 27 August. The cruise will conclude at Samsø Municipality on 28 August.
