Dancing in Freedom: The Rise of NRB Collective in Mexico City

In Mexico City, a vibrant collective known as NRB has transformed the nightlife landscape by creating inclusive spaces for people to dance freely. Founded nine years ago, NRB started as an informal meetup of friends dancing in an apartment. Since then the community has thrived and now attracts thousands of people to their weekend dance parties. In these meetings amenities, community, beauty and love greets you from the moment you step through the door.

Though it began with only 20 participants, NRB soon grew to reach hundreds as news of the program circulated. The collective’s transition from private apartments to public urban parks allowed the group to host over 100 people. Today, NRB regularly welcomes over 300 people to its events, which feature diverse musical styles including experimental jazz and Egyptian hip-hop combined with cumbias infused with electronic beats.

To date, NRB has run more than 300 sessions in unique venues, ranging from a former textile factory to a beautiful botanical garden. This innovative approach has attracted the attention of local government leaders. In turn, it has produced a collaboration with the local agency that protects Mexico City’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed historic core. Furthermore, NRB has worked with museum directors to gain sound equipment and resources necessary for their events.

The collective’s founder, Axel Martínez, emphasizes the significance of community in NRB’s growth. He defines the mission of the organization as creating a “community of philosophy and action.” Martínez credits NRB’s success in part to the deep sense of belonging it carves out for its members. This relationship is vital to their long-term survival.

“In a capitalist reality like ours, it’s very difficult to find an alternative, especially one that is free.” – Axel Martínez

With attendees ranging from all walks of life and age groups, these events are enjoyable for all—from kids to senior citizens. One of the first musicians to frequent NRB parties, Isabel Miraflores, values the lack of exclusivity among the spaces.

“I think it’s wonderful because it’s a free event,” – Isabel Miraflores

The mood at NRB events is always so uplifting, celebratory, and joyful. One of the highlights of the gatherings are the times when participants form huge groups and dance together. The parties almost always include both an indoor and outdoor dance floor, so participants can conveniently switch between the two atmospheres.

“We get together with people from all parts of society and we have fun without any trouble.” – Isabel Miraflores

Ana Celia Agustín, another fellow participant, shared her gratitude especially for the positive space that NRB fosters.

All the traditional and diverse musical talents showcased at NRB events really help create that celebratory feel. So attendees can look forward to a high-energy, eclectic blend of sounds that promotes self-expression and fosters a sense of freedom on the dance floor.

“Being able to come to a space where you feel happiness and respect… it gives you peace of mind,” – Ana Celia Agustín

Mateo Cruz, one of countless young leaders who have discovered hope and inspiration in NRB’s network, told his powerful story of transformation.

As NRB continues to grow, it remains dedicated to its core mission: providing free spaces for people to experience the joy of dance and community. The goal of the collective is to be more inclusive and creative. This year, this commitment invites you to come and celebrate with us, creating connections that transcend social divides.

“Here I found a new place. It’s been an eye-opening experience for me to discover that I have all this stuff inside me that I can let go of. I can completely free myself from what others think, from what I think myself.” – Mateo Cruz

As NRB continues to grow, it remains dedicated to its core mission: providing free spaces for people to experience the joy of dance and community.
