Under the current rules, Dakota Johnson just became one of the shortest-lived Razzie winners in history! She won the Razzy award for Worst Actress for her role in Madame Web. The film was awarded ‘Worst Picture’ at the annual Razzie Awards, held in February of this year. It took home awards for both Worst Picture and Worst Screenplay. Then Johnson’s acceptance into the exclusive club went sideways. Fellow Razzie winner Sandra Bullock offered a spot for her at a monthly brunch of former honorees.
Instead of a letter, Bullock sent Johnson an audio message with lots of love. In it, she challenged her to come aboard an incredible cohort of previous Razzie laureates. Johnson told us about her shock and excitement when she first got the email. “I got a voice note from Sandra Bullock… because I don’t know if you know, but I won the Razzie for Worst Actress,” she shared during an appearance on Amy Poehler’s podcast, Good Hang.
>She’s really iconic to me as a movie star.” She added, “I was like, ‘Oh my God! This humble recognition serves as an important reminder of the unity that often exists between performers, even when they’re being awarded for their worst work.
Earlier this year, Dakota Johnson’s Razzie win was one of the most memorable entries to her acting CV so far. She won Worst Actress and Worst Screen Couple for the same performance in 2009’s All About Steve. In that film, she was cast as an offbeat crossword puzzler who falls in love with a TV news photographer. The $4.97 Razzie award, showered in gold spray paint, says “I suck!” in the funniest way possible. It does us all a favor by amplifying the industry’s more contrarian perspectives.
Bullock has had her own special relationship with the Razzies. She was rewarded for her work with two Razzies in 2010 for those performances. During this period, she won acclaim and her first Academy Award for her performance in the biopic The Blind Side, centered on NFL player Michael Oher.
The Razzie Awards have been mesmerizing audiences for decades through their unusual critical lens. It doesn’t hurt that a huge number of celebrities take gracious pride in their recognition, boosting the runup’s glam quotient. In addition to Dakota Johnson, filmmaker and legendary godfather Francis Ford Coppola was recognized this year for his work on Megalopolis.
