Crown Prince Christian of Denmark, at 19 years old, is embracing a longstanding royal tradition by engaging in military training at the Guard Hussar Regiment in Slagelse. Since February 3, 2025, he has committed himself to four months of basic military training. This endeavor is part of his gap year activities, following an enriching three-month stint in East Africa last year where he gained hands-on experience working on two farms and learning about conservation.
The barracks in Slagelse, where Crown Prince Christian currently resides, are conveniently located just an hour's drive from his royal residence at Frederik VIII's Palace, Amalienborg in Copenhagen. Despite his royal status and role as the heir to the Danish throne, Christian is not earning a wage during his time at the military academy. His dedication highlights his commitment to public service, a path well-trodden by members of the Danish Royal Family.
"For over a month, His Royal Highness the Crown Prince has been serving as a conscript at the Guard Hussar Regiment in Slagelse."
The tradition of royal service in the Armed Forces is deeply rooted, with His Majesty King Frederik having completed his own military service as a platoon commander at the same regiment in 1988. This commitment to military duty underscores the family's dedication to serving Denmark. Notably, Crown Prince Christian has also stepped up as the acting regent for Denmark during his father's absence from the country.
Crown Prince Christian's journey into military life began with him arriving solo at the barracks last month. However, he recently had the opportunity to reunite with his parents, King Frederik and Queen Mary, when they visited Slagelse. In a moment captured for posterity, Queen Mary was seen looking stylish in a corduroy coat and sunglasses as she posed for a photo with her son.
"It is a long tradition that members of the Royal House serve in the Armed Forces."
Christian's siblings, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent, and Princess Josephine, remain supportive as he undertakes this significant chapter in his life. The Crown Prince’s involvement in military training symbolizes not only a personal milestone but also reinforces the Danish Royals' enduring bond with their nation's Armed Forces.
