The Department of Education, Sport and Culture (DESC) has started a six-week consultation period. They’re looking for your feedback on the second revised draft of the proposed Education Act. Residents are encouraged to leave comments on the consultation, providing feedback on the suggested changes. These changes will really improve educational opportunities across the Isle of Man, and it will end on 15 June.
The government brought the new Education Act as a signature reform under their larger public-sector-spanning Island Plan in 2022. They update this plan annually to keep it fresh. The Island Plan represents the vision that every child should have the opportunity to grow up healthy, happy, and successful. It’s all about delivering for the educational needs of every child, five to 19.
Perhaps the most important element of the Education Act is its emphasis on children who are the subjects of different kinds of care orders. The proposed legislation gives DESC the authority and responsibility to raise the educational attainment of these children. Until their 19th birthday, as long as they are engaged in education, they can keep getting this help. This integrated whole school approach demonstrates the government’s dedication to inclusive education.
Moreover, the second draft would allow for the creation of learning environments beyond the traditional school model, provided they meet certain criteria. DESC is doing exciting work to introduce a more diverse religious education curriculum. They will include inspiration from non-Christian traditions, welcoming and engaging with a wonderfully broader approach to education.
Minister Daphne Caine noted that real community engagement is the key to success in this new initiative.
“I encourage all stakeholders – educators, parents and members of the public – to participate,” – Minister Daphne Caine
This new consultation process follows a similar survey from last year. By having this process, we ensure that the cumulative input from past engagements informs the new draft. The DESC hopes to ensure that all children have access to a diverse, well-prepared, and equitable educational environment. This is especially true for those even unable to afford to access a traditional school environment.
The Department has expressed its commitment to shaping an educational framework that supports every child’s learning journey, aiming for a system that promotes success and achievement.
“The Education Act will allow the department to promote the educational achievement of children aged five to 19,” – Department of Education
With this DESC consultation, DESC is constantly improving the Education Act. They want to ensure that their policies serve the needs of their students on the Isle of Man. All residents must be mobilized to participate actively, making sure that public sentiments are heard and included in this once-in-a-generation legislative advancement.
