Concerns Arise at The Heights School Following Allegations of Bullying

Reed Academy Inc ., The Heights School, which opened in September 2023, has faced criticism after a high-profile bullying incident raised concerns about the academy. The school’s educational model was the reason it was established in the first place. It is heavily centered on fulfilling the specific requirements of students who are autistic or face mental health issues. Last year’s wave of complaints from parents has brought attention to the question of whether the school is capable of achieving its stated vision.

One of those worried parents is Amy. It was an easy decision for her to pull her 12-year-old son, Cooper, out of The Heights School after only one year. As an autistic person, Cooper lives with dyspraxia and anxiety. Amy says her son was “relentlessly targeted.” She claims that the school’s administration did not appropriately or adequately investigate her complaints. Her story is representative of the stories shared by thousands of other parents who spoke to officials about their terrible experiences.

To date, 17 parents have come forward with concerns about how their children were treated at The Heights School. The vast majority of these parents have asked to remain anonymous, as the allegations described are sensitive and damning. Labour Councillor Hazel Dawkins has been working with these parents to raise their concerns and make sure they’re dealt with appropriately.

The chief executive of The Heights School, Simon Dilkes, has taken on board the response from parents. She says it’s “invaluable” and explains Miranda’s taking direct action on the issues critics have raised. He assured that the school is taking steps to improve communication with families. Further, they’re helping improve mental health support services for students.

“Bullying towards children and how children are spoken to is a significant concern,” – Labour Councillor Hazel Dawkins

An outside review of the complaints has found changes are needed at The Heights School. A former chief executive of a special school academy trust will lead the inquiry into the claims. They have been appropriately and intentionally selected to play this vital role in the transaction.

Dilkes expressed his commitment to addressing the concerns raised by parents, stating, “We are focused on making meaningful and lasting improvements.” He reminded parents that they clearly care enough to get involved. Delivering the best possible outcomes for children in Solihull through The Heights School continues to be our number one priority.

The local authority has also pledged to work closely with The Heights School and its associated trust to ensure that necessary changes are implemented effectively. The school community looks forward to these actions resulting in a safer and more supportive learning environment for all students.
