Community Pillar Walt Butler Vows to Rebuild After Devastating Altadena Fire

Walt Butler, an 83-year-old resident of Altadena, faces the daunting task of rebuilding his life after a catastrophic fire destroyed his home of 60 years. The blaze, part of a series of fires that swept across Los Angeles, consumed over 14,000 acres, claimed 16 lives, and obliterated 7,000 structures. Despite the immense loss, Butler remains a symbol of resilience and community spirit, deeply rooted in the history and heart of Altadena.

The fire forced Butler to flee as embers and ash descended, leaving destruction in their wake. Known affectionately as "the heart and soul of Altadena and Pasadena," Butler's dedication to his community is well-documented. He served as an assistant track and field coach at Pasadena City College, guiding the team to three consecutive state championships from 1975 to 1977. His commitment extends beyond sports, as he has spent decades fostering connections and supporting neighbors in the storied Black community of Altadena.

"From a guy with everything, to nothing," Walt Butler reflected on his sudden loss.

The support for Butler has been overwhelming. A GoFundMe campaign initiated by his four children quickly amassed over $900,000 in donations. This remarkable outpouring of generosity followed the viral spread of Butler's story on social media, which resonated with many who found strength and comfort in his plight. Despite the devastation, Butler expressed gratitude for the support and his enduring health.

"I spent my whole life helping people. I didn't think it would happen to me, but it did. But I have my health, and my life," said Butler, embodying resilience amidst adversity.

Butler's emotional response to the global support illustrates the deep bonds within Altadena. His tears were mixed with disbelief as he acknowledged the widespread kindness extended to him. His words are a testament to the unique fabric of Altadena—a community where individuals not only share proximity but also form lasting relationships.

"This is what’s unique about Altadena. We liked each other, because we see each other almost every day," Butler noted.
