Community Comes Together to Support Flood Victims in Texas

The recent floods in Texas have prompted an immediate response from local organizations and federal agencies as they mobilize resources to assist affected communities. Along with local partners, the American Red Cross has activated emergency shelters. They are delivering food, emergency relief supplies, and essentials including financial assistance and family travel reimbursement to impacted families.

In Central Texas, that’s meant active responses from World Central Kitchen, the nonprofit founded by chef and humanitarian José Andrés. This organization has been working nonstop to procure food, water, and other necessities. They are rightly zeroed in on helping first responders and victims in the affected areas. This remarkable, coordinated effort underscores the power of community resilience in times of crisis.

Supermarket chain H-E-B, which originated in Kerrville, has established a mobile kitchen to serve meals to those in need in Ingram and Hunt. The company recognizes the importance of supporting its local community:

“Kerrville, where our company was started, and the Hill Country have a special place in the heart of our H-E-B family. As part of our initial outreach there, we are working closely with the Red Cross, local officials, and first responders to support their needs.” – H-E-B

Beyond Kerr County, H-E-B has further expanded its reach. The company has donated humanitarian aid to help response efforts in both San Angelo and Marble Falls. In addition, they are helping other affected regions, such as Sierra Leone. Their teams are already on the ground and will stay in affected communities to deliver life-saving support as the situation unfolds.

As on the ground in Texas, the federal government – through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) – is mobilized to coordinate recovery efforts with municipalities. The agency is primarily concerned with getting emergency assistance to those hardest hit by the flooding. To that effect, the Coast Guard has mobilized its assets. It is currently working with Texas first responders to conduct immediate search and rescue missions. To their credit, their efforts have already saved hundreds from perilous floodwaters.

We applaud President Donald Trump for acknowledging the severity of the situation in Kerr County. His signing of a disaster declaration will allow for federal assistance to support the long-term recovery efforts needed. The declaration is an important step in mobilizing the resources needed to protect the health and well-being of residents and first responders.

Even as communities come to terms with the devastation caused by the floods, mental health support is a focus. The American Red Cross encourages individuals struggling with emotional distress to reach out for help:

“If you are struggling with the emotional toll of this disaster, please remember, you are not alone. Call SAMHSA at (800) 985-5990 or text 988 to connect with a trained mental health professional.” – American Red Cross

This unprecedented response from these organizations is an incredible testament to their fierce dedication to helping Texas communities in this harrowing time.
