Commemorating Five Years Since George Floyd’s Murder in Minneapolis

On May 25, 2025, thousands of people—from as far away as Hawaii—flocked to Minneapolis to celebrate the fifth anniversary of George Floyd’s murder. This annual gathering is an important, poignant reminder of the brutal spark that set off what is now a global movement for racial justice. It demands deep police reform. Participants gathered, carrying and transporting Floyd’s memory with them, to consider what has changed—and what hasn’t—over the last five years.

We chose to do this gathering on a Sunday. It was a powerful day that unified community members, activists, and leaders who spoke with urgency and vigor over their commitments to overcoming systemic racism. Attendees shared stories, held moments of silence, and engaged in discussions about the ongoing struggle for equality and justice in the wake of Floyd’s death.

Since May 25, 2020, when George Floyd was killed during an encounter with police, the world has witnessed significant demonstrations and calls for change. The anniversary itself was a time for reflection. It created a unique opportunity to reflect on how far we’ve come—all the positive progress we made toward our stated goals. Many expressed hope that the movement ignited by Floyd’s death would lead to lasting reforms within law enforcement and beyond.

NewsFeed covered this historic landslide of a gathering, focusing particularly on the passion and commitment expressed in every corner by participants. The report included national press of the convening and added a valuable perspective on the role of local movements in the context of social justice movements more widely.
