Collision during Fisheries Inspection Leads to Assault Charge in Nova Scotia

A member of the Sipekne’katik First Nation has been charged. She hopes this will come after the confrontation with the fisheries officer on April 28th, 2025. The crash occurred at Eel Pond, located just off Hwy 7 in Smiths Settlement. This site is about 28 miles (45 kilometers) east of Halifax. The confrontation occurred when the fisheries officer was trying to investigate an illegal dumping at the location.

A 36-year-old man was driving his Acura at the time of the incident. He ran head-on into one uniformed fisheries officer who had been waving for him to pull over. The collision caught the attention of local authorities. In response, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) immediately took to action.

Fisheries officers subsequently arrested a second man at the location where the incident occurred. This arrest was the result of a lengthy investigation under the Fisheries Act. This individual was later released. The RCMP has released a timeline of events leading up to the collision. They reiterated that their inquiry into what happened, the manner of death, and the conduct of all parties involved is still underway.

The initial report regarding this incident was published at 4:40 PM on the same day, with updates provided until 7:26 PM. The first was the fisheries officer conducting a standard dock-side inspection. Their secondary aim was to enforce adherence to local fisheries regulations.
