Children’s Home Receives High Praise from Inspectors

Ofsted inspectors have commended a children’s home run by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council. They praised its excellent provision of round-the-clock care and support for children with complex needs. The home provides intensive residential care for six children dealing with social, emotional or mental health issues. It received a ‘good’ rating for its overall effectiveness in establishing trust and protecting the safety and well-being of the children it serves.

As of the most recent inspection, the family home was occupied by four minor children. They blossomed in the entrepreneurial, constructive, and determined spirit fostered by new manager Laura Wedgewood. Wedgewood’s leadership has been instrumental in fostering effective relationships with other professionals involved in the children’s lives. The inspectors commended her work in ensuring that all departments and professionals put the children’s best interests first. She is quick to push back on any deviations from the care plan.

Laura Wedgewood, who entered the role this past May, described her position as “stressful” but “so rewarding.” She’s most satisfied by the change she creates in the lives of young people. Her dedication to the well-being of the children is evident in her daily interactions and commitment to creating a nurturing environment.

“When you feel you’ve made that difference to a young person, well, it’s a wonderful feeling.” – Laura Wedgewood

Councillor Bill Suthers, cabinet member for children and families is a passionate advocate of the model of ‘in-house’ care. He commends the hard working men and women who deliver this invaluable service. Specifically, he focused on the need to keep kids connected to their communities and families.

“One of the real positives of ‘in-house’ care by the council’s own dedicated professionals within our borough is it can help maintain a child’s relationship with their own communities and families when appropriate. That can have enormous benefits for a child.” – Councillor Bill Suthers

The residence, a stunning side hall colonial, is located on an immense property. A long, tree-lined driveway provides a tranquil environment that the kids really appreciate having. Inspectors have praised Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council for their outstanding work. This recognition acknowledges the council’s great dedication to providing high-quality care and support for these vulnerable children within the borough.
