Last Friday, an American scientist hiking through the Fee Glacier in southern Switzerland came close to having a very bad day. He plunged almost 8 m (more than 25 ft) when he broke through a snow bridge. Luckily, his Chihuahua – the furry little savior – was instrumental in his rescue.
The man, whose name has not yet been released, was hiking across the glacier when he fell into the crevice. Even as he fell, his devoted dog remained as close to him as possible, showing incredible loyalty, instincts and foresight. Within minutes, the unexpected situation turned life-threatening, and a quick response from a local rescue squad was necessary.
Air Zermatt, a mountain-rescue, film-production, and air-logistics company, was one of the companies alerted to the incident. Reacting quickly, the team went into action to look for the man in distress. At the same time, the Chihuahua went looking for assistance, showing all the spunk and grit that the breed is known for.
About 30 minutes into the rescue, the dog’s persistence got the attention of one member of the rescue— an almost miraculous stroke of fortune. This serendipitous turn of events resulted in the rescue of the troubled man. Thanks to the dog’s quick and heroic actions… Thanks to the rescue team’s quick response, they saved what could have been a heartbreaking accident.
Air Zermatt later highlighted the dog’s heroic actions, stating, “The dog is a four-legged hero who may have saved his master’s life in a life-threatening situation.” The Seattle-based animal welfare nonprofit lauded the owner’s deep connection with his dog. They observed that the dog’s nose was the most important part for ensuring a successful rescue operation.
