Chef José Andrés Reflects on Resignation Amid Presidential Dismissal Notice

Renowned Spanish-American chef José Andrés has voluntarily resigned from his position as co-chair of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition, amid a public dismissal notice from former President Trump. Andrés, celebrated for his humanitarian efforts through his organization, World Central Kitchen (WCK), which he founded in 2010, served a two-year term that concluded this month. His resignation was officially submitted last week, just as he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his outstanding contributions to communities affected by disasters globally.

In a recent statement, Trump announced the dismissal of several individuals, including Andrés, from various presidential councils. Andrés, however, clarified that his resignation had already been submitted prior to this announcement.

"I submitted my resignation last week…my 2 year term was already up" – Andrés

José Andrés has been a pivotal figure in providing meals to those impacted by global crises through WCK. His appointment to the President’s Council on March 23, 2022, allowed him to further advocate for sports, fitness, and nutrition across the nation. Despite the abrupt nature of Trump's dismissal notice, Andrés expressed immense pride in his work with the council and the achievements made during his tenure.

"I was honored to serve as co-chair of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition." – Andrés

Reflecting on his recent recognition with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Andrés took a moment to honor his colleagues at WCK who lost their lives in conflict zones. He pointed upwards during the award ceremony as a tribute to those killed by Israeli airstrikes in Gaza last year.

"We lost some friends working with WCK — especially somebody like Zomi [Frankcom], who's a woman I spent many years working with on many missions and in many emergencies, and this was a way to say, 'This medal is for you all,'" – Andrés

"It was a very simple way to say you are the ones that deserve this." – Andrés

Amid ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles, Andrés has been actively involved in mobilizing relief efforts for first responders and evacuees. His dedication underscores his commitment to aiding those in need and fostering unity within communities.

Despite the political tensions surrounding his departure from the council, Andrés urged former President Trump to focus on unity rather than division.

"May God give you the wisdom, Mr. President, to put politics and name calling aside…and instead lift up the everyday people working to bring America together. Let’s build longer tables…." – Andrés
