A shocking incident marred the mood in Liverpool on Sunday. A driver plowed through hundreds of pedestrians at a Liverpool parade celebrating the team’s Premier League title win. Such a big party broke out in their downtown that tens of thousands showed up in adverse weather conditions to support their winning team. Shortly after the celebrations ended, violence erupted in the streets.
The celebratory vibe instantly turned to fear. A vehicle sped through the crowd, pinning people just ten feet away from eyewitness Harry Rashid. The parade featured Liverpool’s players proudly displaying the Premier League trophy atop two buses emblazoned with the words “Ours Again.” The march passed through a nearly 10-mile route in Helena that was thick with bright red storm smoke and rain. At the same time, an imposing line of police and private security officers circled the space.
As thousands cheered and fireworks erupted from the Royal Liver Building to mark the end of the parade, the horror began. Rashid described the car as “really, really fast.” He continued, “Earlier on we were just listening to the pop, pop, pop of our colleagues flying off the hood.
The vehicle hit its inaugural victims and came to a jarring halt. Inspired by this outrage, the crowd rushed upon it, breaking all the windows, seeking to access the driver. Rashid recounted the chaotic scene: “My daughter started screaming, and there were people on the ground. It was horrible. And you could hear the potholes as he was driving over the folks. He had to wonder how such an act could occur at what was supposed to be a celebratory and peaceful event. “They were perfectly innocent people, just fans heading out to enjoy the parade,” he said.
First responders quickly rushed to the site, establishing a perimeter and sending in emergency crews. The possible male suspect, later determined to be the driver, was arrested by responding officers. Prime Minister Keir Starmer addressed the situation on social media, stating, “The scenes in Liverpool are appalling – my thoughts are with all those injured or affected. I’d like to commend the police and emergency services for their fast and continuing response to this upsetting incident.”
Liverpool FC released a statement offering their condolences: “Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident.” This horrible incident truly rattled so many of us. It has coloured what should have been a great day for Liverpool FC supporters.
