Celebrating 30 Years of Comedy: A Look Back at Peter Segal’s Iconic Film

The hugely popular baseball comedy directed by Peter Segal is turning 30! Don’t miss it when it is released in 4K for the first time ever on March 25— mark your calendars! Known for its memorable characters and comedic plot, the film stands as Segal's second venture connected to Saturday Night Live following his work on "Wayne's World."

Actor Rob Lowe once again took on the role of Paul Barrish, known to Tommy as his older step-brother. This landmark film allowed his incredible range to shine through. Barrish's character is central to the storyline as he conspires to seize control of his father's company, aided by his secret lover and accomplice, Beverly. Incidentally, Beverly is played by Bo Derek—her role in the movie was so abysmal that it received her a Razzie nomination.

Director Peter Segal remembered his very bizarre first meeting with Bo Derek, illustrating the struggle they had during casting. From the very beginning, Segal was unsure whether he’d be able to cast Derek because of her persona.

"And so I was thrust in front of her by a producer, and he says, 'Approve the wardrobe, please.' And so she opened up her robe and flashed her bikini, and of course, I kept my eyes looking straight at her eyes. I said, 'Perfect.' I can't look up and down. So that was very weird." – Peter Segal

Segal has high praise for the late filmmaker Blake Edwards. He playfully attributes the movie “10” with getting him through puberty, which likely fueled his desire to pursue Derek for the role.

Casting woes made life difficult for Rob Lowe, who was first cast in a different part of the movie. Scheduling conflicts made Lowe unable to keep the role, but he later rejoined the cast as Paul Barrish.

"But that's where he auditioned. And then, Rob's schedule changed, and we ended up going with Rob. But yeah, it was a bizarre place to do an audition, that's for sure." – Peter Segal
