Carlo Ancelotti Bids Farewell to Real Madrid as Xabi Alonso Prepares to Step In

Carlo Ancelotti, the legendary coach of Real Madrid, is preparing to leave the club. His departure comes with the new format Club World Cup just months away in June. Ancelotti’s legacy is already cemented. Ancelotti is already a figure etched into football history, winning five Champions League trophies, two of them with AC Milan. He will conclude his second spell in charge of Real Madrid after an emotional farewell appearance against Real Sociedad at Santiago Bernabeu stadium this coming Saturday.

Real Madrid President Florentino Perez expressed deep gratitude for Ancelotti’s contributions, stating that “Carlo Ancelotti will forever be part of the great Madridista family.” Ancelotti has had a tremendous influence on the club since his return in 2021. Under his stewardship, they won Europe’s top competition in 2022 and 2024.

As Ancelotti steeled himself for the tearful farewell, he dove into his time with the club and what it all meant. “They’ve been unforgettable years, an incredible journey full of emotions, trophies and, above all, the pride of representing this badge,” he remarked. If this is indeed the 65-year-old coach’s final game, he expects that to be a highly emotional affair. He stated, “I have it in my genetics that I get emotional very quickly… it will be a beautiful day.”

Ancelotti’s departure was confirmed in official terms earlier on Friday, a full year before the end of his contract. He will most likely assume the role of head coach for the Brazil national team this summer. He readily welcomed his successor, Xabi Alonso, when he takes over as Real Madrid manager. Alonso has yet to be officially named to the post.

“Xabi is the first (to come after me), I wish him all the luck in the world, because he is a coach who has the characteristics to coach this club, this team – enjoy it,” Ancelotti expressed regarding Alonso’s imminent appointment.

Ancelotti’s relationship with the players is another major difference. He shared a poignant moment with Luka Modric before his last game, reflecting on their journey together and the legacy they built. Real Madrid acknowledged Ancelotti’s influence, stating, “We feel incredibly honoured to have had the chance to enjoy a coach who has helped us achieve so much success.”

As he looks to make his own transition, Ancelotti is understandably modest about advising Alonso on his way. “I don’t want to give advice because everyone has their own idea about football,” he noted, indicating confidence in Alonso’s abilities to lead the team into a new era.
