Canadian Trans Activist Urges Travel Safety Guidelines After U.S. Executive Order

Fae Johnstone, a prominent trans activist, is urging the Canadian government to update its travel safety guidelines for Canadians traveling to the United States. This call comes in response to an executive order issued by President Donald Trump, which restricts gender expression to strictly male or female. The order has raised significant concerns among transgender individuals and advocacy groups, with GLAAD Law labeling it a "direct attack on transgender Americans."

Johnstone, whose passport features an "X" instead of a male or female designation, fears this might not be recognized by U.S. authorities. Canada introduced the "X" option in 2019 to uphold the identities of its citizens, a move welcomed by activists. However, the recent executive order has created a climate of uncertainty for trans Canadians like Johnstone, compelling her to avoid travel to the U.S. for the time being.

“Trans folks just want to live our lives.” – Fae Johnstone

The executive order specifies that sex is immutable and only acknowledges two genders, raising apprehensions about the recognition of non-binary and transgender identities. Johnstone believes her passport may face challenges when crossing the U.S. border, prompting her appeal for updated travel guidelines from Canada. Despite these concerns, Global Affairs Canada has yet to respond or provide updated guidance for affected Canadians.

“It is nothing short of an existential assault on the very existence of trans and gender-diverse people both in America and around the world,” – Fae Johnstone

GLAAD Law released a statement on Monday condemning the executive order as a deliberate effort to undermine the rights of transgender individuals.

“The administration is trying to create fear and sow chaos by its statements and orders, but no executive action can change the fundamental truth that transgender people are vital members of our families and communities.” – GLAAD Law

The organization emphasized the importance of dignity and respect for all individuals, regardless of their gender identity.

“Like all people, transgender people deserve dignity, respect, and the freedom to live without fear of government-sanctioned harm,” – GLAAD Law

In addition, GLAAD Law reaffirmed its commitment to defending LGBTQ+ rights and ensuring equal protection under the law.

“GLAAD Law will use every tool we have to fight for LGBTQ+ people’s rights and for fairness and dignity. We will defend the fundamental principle that equal protection under the law is guaranteed — without exception.” – GLAAD Law
