Randeep Sarai’s departure from Gavi’s replenishment conference in Brussels, Belgium, on June 25, 2025. At this most consequential moment, he confirmed Canada’s support for Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance. This organization has been, and still is, key in getting immunizations to well over half of all the children born each year. The Canadian government further committed to $675 million over the next five years. This funding will help Gavi continue its work to make vaccines more cost–effective and accessible and to promote the health security of low–income countries.
Gavi’s extensive efforts have saved millions of children from life-threatening diseases such as human papillomavirus (HPV), malaria, measles, and polio. Canada’s ongoing support will ensure routine, life-saving vaccines are delivered to at least 500 million additional children around the world. This historic global health effort has saved more than 8 million lives. This smart strategic investment will better protect the world’s children and help strengthen health systems. Beyond that, it’ll leave us better equipped for the next pandemic or outbreak of disease.
On the sidelines of the conference, Sarai met with influential leaders in global health. In tandem with one another, they plotted cooperative methods to address persistent and disproportionate public health burdens. He underscored immunization as the best intervention for advancing health equity and security around the world.
“The health challenges facing our world are not getting simpler. No child, anywhere, should die from a disease that immunization can prevent. Our support to Gavi will help deliver on Canada’s commitment to improve economic growth, advance global security and stand up for Canadian values such as compassion and solidarity as we strive for a better future for all.” – Randeep Sarai, Secretary of State (International Development)
Canada has made new commitments to help Gavi accelerate the rollout of these gamechanging new malaria vaccines. This funding will allow us to craft much more practical, climate smart initiatives. We put in more than 20,000 solar-powered refrigerators and freezers. This enhancement is a game changer for storing and distributing vaccines in remote regions.
Gavi’s work has far-reaching implications, not just for child health but for global economic growth. Gavi’s programs are projected to produce more than $100 billion in economic returns for all countries that participate in their program. That impact will be felt over the next five years.
