Canada Issues Updated Travel Advisory for U.S. Visitors

The federal government of Canada has released an extraordinary new travel advisory warning its citizens considering visiting the United States. They all want to convey their desire to comply with U.S. immigration laws. This public interest advisory is the first large-scale national response to the Trump administration’s draconian immigration law enforcement. Visitors should expect to register if they wish to stay for over 30 days. The reg pursuant to which this rule is issued applies not just to Canadians, but to all foreign nationals visiting the U.S.

Go to this U.S. Customs and Border Protection webpage to see if you’ve been automatically registered upon entering the country. It’s that simple to learn if you qualify! This data is available through the I-94 admission record, which now shows if someone has been automatically registered.

"The U.S. government strictly enforces immigration regulations. Remaining in the United States beyond your authorized period of stay can result in serious consequences such as detention or deportation," the Canadian government warned.

The advisory further points out the consequences of not registering, including hefty civil fines and even criminal misdemeanor prosecution. Canadian travelers need to act now to prevent unexpected complications. As applicants, they should look up their registration status on the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website. These materials help to inform public users on when they will need to register and what they should do to register.

"Immigration officers may ask you to demonstrate that you are a temporary visitor in the United States," noted the Canadian government, stressing the importance of adhering to U.S. immigration laws.

The federal Canadian government is advising all Canadians planning to travel to check entry/exit requirements enforced by U.S. authorities. It cannot step in when these requirements are not fulfilled. Canadians need to closely understand these regulations and the implications of them. So it’s important to know what they are before they cross south of the border.
