On that date, March 27, 2026, Canada’s federal government announced a groundbreaking investment of $28.9 million. This funding will advance cutting-edge clean technology projects around the country through its Energy Innovation Program. This central initiative aims to promote emerging carbon capture and renewable energy technologies. This not only keeps Canadian households confident in the reliability and affordability of our energy landscape.
Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson announced the funding, saying that the provincial government is deeply committed to providing clean tech solutions and supports. The Energy Innovation Program is one of the bedrocks of this new initiative and is aimed at catalyzing innovation in the energy sector. This major grant will deepen our understanding of carbon capture and sequestration processes. This is an important step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Two Saskatchewan–based organizations will get almost $15 million of the total funding. These public-private organizations have been instrumental in pushing forward carbon capture, utilization and storage technologies. The funding will facilitate the design and understanding of processes that capture carbon emissions, thereby contributing to Canada’s environmental goals.
Besides these carbon capture demonstration projects, we’ll invest more than $9 million in renewable energy projects. Given the scale of this investment, we’re putting a particular emphasis on solar power. This investment will jump-start the creation of thousands of solar energy projects. Together, these initiatives will fuel Canada’s transition toward a greener, more inclusive economy that leaves no one behind.
Additionally, the plan features billions for smart grid technologies to help make electricity flow more efficiently. These significant investments are key to welcoming more renewable energy into Canada’s existing energy infrastructure. In total, these projects represent a unique set of five projects that have been targeted for funding in the emerging field of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology.
