Charlotte Peet, a 32-year-old British journalist, is at the center of an international search after being reported missing in Brazil. Peet, who has been living in Brazil as a correspondent for over two years, was last contacted by a friend in Rio de Janeiro on February 8. Her disappearance was reported to Brazilian authorities on February 17, prompting an investigation that has now drawn attention from both local and international organizations.
Initially, the Tourist Assistance Police in Rio de Janeiro reviewed the case. However, the investigation was soon transferred to the homicide and personal protection division in São Paulo. Peet had briefly returned to the United Kingdom before moving back to Brazil in November 2024, where she continued her career as a freelance journalist. Fluent in Portuguese, she has worked for several publications throughout her time in Brazil, with her online portfolio showcasing her extensive work in the region.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) is actively involved in the situation. They have confirmed their awareness of Peet's disappearance and are providing assistance to her family. A spokesperson from the FCDO stated that they are "supporting the family of a British woman who has been reported as missing in Brazil and are in contact with the local authorities."
"ACIE and its board of directors appeal to the competent authorities to intensify the search in order to find the British journalist as soon as possible," said the Association of Foreign Press Correspondents in Brazil (ACIE).
The involvement of the ACIE highlights the growing concern within the journalistic community regarding Peet's whereabouts. The organization is urging Brazilian authorities to expedite their efforts in locating the journalist.
São Paulo’s public security secretariat has affirmed that they are taking this matter seriously. They stated that they are "taking steps to locate the missing woman and clarify the facts." The 5th Precinct of the DHPP's Missing Persons Division is currently overseeing the investigation, deploying resources and strategies to uncover any leads in the case.
