Britain Commemorates 80th Anniversary of Victory in Europe Day

On May 8, 2025, Britain would have celebrated the 80 th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day. This occasion was unique in history: the victorious end of World War II on the European continent. The day commemorates the official surrender of Nazi Germany to Allied forces, a pivotal event that concluded years of conflict and loss across Europe.

King Charles and Queen Camilla took center stage during the commemorative events, watching a military parade from Buckingham Palace that featured members of the United Kingdom’s armed forces. King Charles as rear-admiral, proudly wearing a Naval No.1 uniform with no medals or decorations. This decision is similar to the uniform worn by his grandfather, King George VI, who was infamously seen wearing one on the Buckingham Palace balcony in 1945.

Queen Camilla complemented the occasion with a sapphire blue wool crepe dress and coat, which featured a distinctive 12th Royal Lancers Brooch. This special brooch was created in memory of her late father’s regiment. It’s a beautiful touch to her uniformed look as the pair pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the war.

The military parade commenced at Parliament and concluded at Buckingham Palace, showcasing the dedication and service of the armed forces. At noon, the entire country paused for a solemn two-minute silence. This special moment really gave everyone the opportunity to stop and think about the sacrifices made by those who have fought for our freedom.

Beyond the parade and moment of silence, many more events are planned during the day. King Charles and Queen Camilla will lead the nation in a service of thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey. Their continued presence demonstrates the importance of this historic occasion.

As part of these commemorative activities, 2,500 beacons will be lit across the UK, representing hope, peace and reflection. A breathtaking installation of 30,000 ceramic poppies will create a massive sea of red that will engulf the Tower of London. This stunning #artinthedark installation is a moving tribute to everyone who has died in conflict.

The culmination of the day will be a massive-scale concert at Horse Guards Palace. This communal effort will make for an ideal moment of commemoration and convening as everyone joins together to celebrate VE Day’s rich legacy.
