As temperatures rose to about 50 degrees Fahrenheit after a frigid night, Patrolman Dave Brosonski, an expert in water rescue, responded swiftly to the call. Brosonski's quick thinking and decisive action were captured on body camera footage shared by the West Long Branch Police Department with ABC News. The footage reveals Brosonski enlisting the aid of a local community member to secure a thick rope around himself before entering the icy waters. This precaution ensured that he could be safely pulled back if necessary. Despite the inherent dangers, Brosonski successfully pulled the child from the freezing lake and ensured they received immediate medical attention.
"As I was making my way to the kid in the water, I didn't know if he could potentially go under and if he went under the ice, I knew I would have to go get him, so I had the rope attached so I could be pulled back out if I had to go under," – Patrolman Dave Brosonski
Following the rescue, first responders transported the child to a local hospital for treatment of hypothermia. Fortunately, the child made a swift recovery and returned to school the very next day. Brosonski humbly downplayed his heroics, expressing discomfort with the attention his actions garnered.
