Billy Joel Cancels Concerts Following Brain Disorder Diagnosis

Billy Joel, the legendary Long Island–born, rock and roll all-father “Piano Man,” dropped some big news yesterday. He’s calling off future performances due to the diagnosis. Sadly, in late May, Joel shared the news that he was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus. This complex condition includes an atypical accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid deep inside the brain. At 76 years old, Joel’s health is on the forefront of his mind, prompting this tough decision.

On his doctor’s advice, Joel has stopped performing for now. His every physical therapy goal is geared toward making a full comeback and return to the ice again. His new squad went on Instagram to give fans the news. They assured that he will be back to the stage as soon as his complete recovery.

“While I regret postponing any shows, my health must come first.” – Billy Joel

Normal pressure hydrocephalus causes a specific triad of symptoms, including impaired mobility, along with other symptoms that impact cognitive function and more. As the U.S. National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke points out, this condition is commonly underdiagnosed. Because of this, it often only gets recognized in its later stages. Joel has already had surgery due to this diagnosis and is hopeful that with his recovery he will be made whole.

Despite this daunting health challenge, Joel is still reaching out to his fans and friends everywhere, through multiple platforms. He recently shared a candid message on social media, stating, “Getting old sucks, but it’s still preferable to getting cremated.” This poignant reflection is a reminder of his strength and dedication to once again performing onstage.

In addition to his health updates, fans can look forward to the upcoming documentary titled “Billy Joel: And So It Goes.” Additionally, the film will feature exclusive, archival footage from Joel’s shows. It will provide a personal view into his private life, through the use of home videos. The documentary will premiere later this summer on HBO and begin streaming on Max. It’s a phenomenal trip through the world of one of music’s everlasting icons.

Joel’s final show took place on November 9, 2024, in Las Vegas, Nevada. As he continues to recover, his many fans wish him well and look forward to seeing him on stage again someday.
