Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan have reunited to star in a highly anticipated Super Bowl commercial, directed by Jake Szymanski. Known for his work with "Saturday Night Live" and Funny or Die, Szymanski brings his comedic expertise to the 30-second spot, which will air during the second quarter of the Super Bowl on February 9. The commercial serves as a nostalgic nod to the beloved 1989 film "When Harry Met Sally," featuring a memorable scene filmed at Katz's Delicatessen in New York City.
In the commercial, Crystal and Ryan reprise their roles as they sit at the iconic deli, ordering sandwiches. Ryan's character expresses initial displeasure with her sandwich but soon finds satisfaction after adding mayonnaise, channeling her famous reaction from the original film. The ad culminates in a surprise twist as Sydney Sweeney delivers the iconic punchline, "I'll have what she's having," originally delivered by Estelle Reiner.
"The opportunity to return to Katz's Deli with Meg was a no brainer," – Billy Crystal.
The commercial is part of a broader marketing campaign for Hellmann's mayonnaise, introducing a "What She's Having" Sandwich Package available online for nationwide delivery. The package includes all the ingredients and recipes to recreate Meg Ryan's sandwich order, complete with Hellmann's mayonnaise, alongside Billy Crystal's pastrami sandwich. Priced at $120, the kit offers free shipping and feeds four to six people.
"Reuniting with Billy and stepping back into Sally’s shoes was a joy." – Meg Ryan.
A longer 60-second version of the commercial will debut on social media, allowing fans to indulge in more laughs and nostalgia. Crystal and Ryan initially teased their reunion through an Instagram post last week, stirring excitement among fans of the classic film.
"Thanks to Hellmann's, who came up with the concept and wrote a really funny spot, we're bringing some laughs and nostalgia and helping When Harry Met Sally celebrate its 35th Anniversary during the Big Game this year," – Billy Crystal.
Director Jake Szymanski expressed his enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing the unique contribution of Crystal and Ryan to the iconic scene.
"Obviously I'm a huge fan of the movie — the biggest thing for me when you have celebrities like this and doing something iconic, is you want to try to make something that feels like only they could have done it," – Jake Szymanski.
