Barricaded Individual in East Block Causes Lockdown on Parliament Hill

On the afternoon of April 5, 2025, Ottawa Police responded to an active shooter situation at Parliament Hill. A spied-upon activist nestling within the mystical folds of East Block. Authorities responded to the incident shortly after 3:00 p.m., prompting a lockdown alert issued by the Parliament Protective Service.

To reclaim the property, police directed all their enforcement efforts to the East Block. This building contains the working offices of all the senators, most of the MPs and their staff. Ottawa Police posted to social media to clarify the situation. They comforted the public by stating there are no reported injuries associated with the explosion.

In a post shared by Quebec Senator Patrick Brazeau, a screenshot of the safety alert was included, providing guidance to those in the vicinity. The alert instructed people to “take shelter in the closest room. Lock all doors and take cover.” This command proved crucial as police worked to communicate with the person holed up inside the establishment.

Ottawa Police tweeted no injuries are reported at this time. They’re doing some major trauma management for a person engaged in this still unfolding episode, that began just before 3 p.m. Their smart work demonstrates the value of a detailed and measured process. They are focused on keeping everyone who is inside East Block safe as they navigate this tense and evolving situation.

Officers rapidly sealed off the scene at 111 Wellington Street as it developed. They redirected staff and visitors away from the East Block to nearby locations for safety. Nowhere is the past better than in the authorities’ commitment to ensure security on Parliament Hill. This commitment takes on special significance given D.C.’s function as a critical governmental center.

The situation is still very active, with police still in ongoing negotiations with the suspect. Further updates will be given as information develops, so stay tuned.
