Tamim Iqbal, former captain of Bangladesh’s ODI cricket team, has been admitted to hospital. He experienced a cardiac arrest during a home game. The tragic event took place during the 36-year-old’s leadership of Mohammedan Sporting Club during a 50-over Dhaka Premier League (DPL) contest. The game took place on the outskirts of Dhaka — in Savar. Afterwards, he was rapidly transported to a local hospital to receive ear-laceration treatment.
The wider cricket community has been coming out strongly in support of Tamim. He has established a brilliant international career from 2007 to 2023, scoring more than 15,000 international runs. He is the only Bangladeshi batsman to score centuries in all three international formats. His unexpected health scare has alarmed citizens across the country. In the aftermath of the shooting, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) promptly called off its scheduled board meeting. A number of Council members quickly went to the hospital to see him.
Speaking about Tamim, medical officer of the BCB Debashis Chowdhury gave positive signal to his injury.
"He suffered a heart attack. What I know so far is that his heart started to function better," said Debashis Chowdhury.
Tamim’s impact on Bangladesh cricket cannot be understated, having played over 390 matches for his country in all formats. Certainly his leadership and on-field performance have been equally pivotal to the team’s successes over the years. From this, his heart attack has brought about an amazing outpouring of support. Her fans and fellow cricketers are sending their best wishes to her.
Team official, Tariqul Islam, appealed for people to give Tamim space to focus as he returns from a difficult period. He reiterated the constant need for prayers for Tamim’s quick recovery. All those in the cricketing world who knew him, and many more who didn’t, admired and respected him immensely.
