Bangkok, a city known for its tropical heat, experienced an unexpected chill as temperatures plummeted to 59.3 degrees Fahrenheit (15.2 degrees Celsius) on Monday, marking the coldest temperature in years. This drop, the lowest since 2020, has surprised both locals and visitors, as Bangkok typically enjoys January temperatures between 73 and 91 degrees Fahrenheit (23 to 33 degrees Celsius). The Thai Meteorological Department attributed this unusual weather to a high-pressure system originating from China.
The cooler weather is expected to persist across Thailand until at least mid-February. While Bangkok residents bundled up in sweaters and hoodies on bustling Silom Road, the northern mountainous regions of Thailand, including areas near Chiang Mai, regularly experience cooler temperatures in January, with lows averaging around 59 degrees Fahrenheit (15 degrees Celsius).
Thanawat Yooyen, a 28-year-old office worker in Bangkok, relished the rare winter moments, expressing, "It’s better than nothing." The sentiment was shared by many who welcomed the change from the usual heat.
“I hope this is good for my business so people would enjoy walking on Bangkok’s streets more,” said Kai, a local drinks vendor.
Some residents see the chilly weather as an opportunity for business growth. Ms. Kai expressed happiness about the cold weather, noting that it might encourage more foot traffic as people brave the outdoors.
"Normally, [the] traffic of people would die down very quickly after lunchtime and in the afternoon. One of the reasons [was] because of the heat," Kai added.
Social media users took to X to share their experiences of Bangkok's rare cold snap. One user humorously referenced Disney's "Frozen," writing about "Mother Elsa" bringing cold weather to the city. Another user remarked on needing a warm jacket due to the uncharacteristic chill.
“So cold in Bangkok this morning I’m in need of my warm jacket. I guess most Thais will be dusting off their puffer coats,” wrote an X user.
Travelers and residents have been advised to take precautions to stay warm and be mindful of fire hazards due to dry and windy conditions. Despite the inconvenience, some locals find joy in the cooler temperatures as it offers a refreshing break from the relentless heat.
