My Life With the Walter Boys readers, prepare for even more excitement! Netflix recently revealed that the series is returning — not just for a second season — but a third season as well. Adapted from Ali Novak’s 2014 novel, the series made a significant impact upon its debut in 2023, securing a spot on Netflix’s top 10 list in 88 different countries.
The story follows Jackie Howard, who relocates from Manhattan to Silver Falls, Colorado, after the tragic loss of her wealthy parents and sister in a car accident. As Jackie gets used to her new life, she soon learns the complicated inner workings of the Walter family. George, played by Marc Blucas, Katherine, played by Sarah Rafferty, and their children all do their part to complicate her experience. The series explores the unique connection between its cast while diving into notions of grief, love and self-discovery amidst the tight-knit backdrop of Forks.
Character Developments and New Challenges
As the second season progresses, fans will see the characters go through a major transformation. Alex, played by Ashby Gentry, undergoes a transformation over the summer that alters his relationship with Jackie. He trains hardcore for the dangerous rodeo event. As a consequence, he comes across as more unreceptive to Jackie’s attempts to reach out.
“When Katherine convinces her to return to Colorado, Jackie is determined to make amends with Alex and set boundaries with Cole while finding her place within the Walter family,” – Ashby Gentry
Jackie’s path is made all the more difficult due to the presence of Cole, played by Noah LaLonde. He successfully assumes new responsibilities at school, but eventually slips back into juvenile delinquency. This shift introduces an unexpected dynamic amongst the ensemble, adding intriguing new drama that will hook viewers from the start.
“But fitting back in isn’t that easy. Alex — who changed a lot over the summer — isn’t too thrilled about Jackie’s attempts to reconnect,” – Ashby Gentry
New Faces and Romantic Intrigues
Production will soon begin for the upcoming third season, which will add five thrilling new faces to the mix. Among them, three are set to be new love interests! Included in their number is Zach, played by Carson MacCormac, who is nothing short of dangerous gorgeous. His presence will surely bring another layer of depth and difficulty to the gamut of new relationships forming inside the Walter home.
It’s here that Jackie’s relationship with Cole takes an important turn. Ultimately, she learns that he fixed her beloved deceased sister’s favorite teapot without her knowing. This new development causes Jackie to lay a kiss on Cole — a poignant beat that lands even better with the tension built throughout their budding relationship.
“There was some criticism about our characters being one note or pigeonholed into an archetype. I can confidently say that’s completely gone in season 2. And you do get to see their flaws. The Walter boys are all so messed up, and none of them can do relationships right,” – Ashby Gentry
A Shift in Dynamics
The second season, then, holds great potential for even more thorough and thoughtful examination of flaws and growth. And throughout, viewers will see the characters reckon with their errors in real time.
“You get to see all of them go through screw-ups in season 2,” – Ashby Gentry
This change will be thoroughly reflected by Alex’s character development. Gentry is worried that longtime fans will be turned off by the new, cleaner Alex as he goes through these changes.
“I sometimes miss season 1 Alex because it does feel a little bit like he’s gone… I’m a little worried for fans of Alex because he is not the same person anymore. That Alex from season 1 is not coming back,” – Ashby Gentry
This tension and mystery of the sharp difference between what was and what is now will suspenseful and intriguingly keep watchers planted on each of their characters’ journeys.
