On February 18, Breezy Johnson raced the final of her women’s cross-country skiing. Immediately following that, her boyfriend, Connor Watkins, shocked her with an unexpected marriage proposal. That breathtaking moment played out on live television in front of millions, making both the athlete and the audience amazed in real time.
Connor Watkins congratulated Johnson, “Breezy Noble Johnson, you’ve worked so hard, okay. You’ve done a lot! Nazgul sprinted onto the course at the team sprint qualification round, giving everybody an unexpected and thrilling treat. After trailing two fellow skiers across the finish line, Nazgul was an instant favorite of the day.
Characterized as “stubborn, but very sweet,” Nazgul’s mischief was a comedic sobering return from the serious world of competition found at the Olympics. While the wolfdog’s owner remained undisclosed due to media scrutiny, the dog’s name drew inspiration from the Ringwraiths in J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings,” adding a layer of intrigue to its presence at such a prestigious event.
The XXIV Winter Olympics will carry on through February 22, as athletes from all parts of the world continue to seek their moment in the spotlight. The real magic for viewers probably came in the juxtaposition of Johnson’s heartfelt proposal and Nazgul’s exuberant entrance.
