Amanda Seyfried Reflects on Audition Journey and Musical Aspirations

Amanda Seyfried opened up about taking risks as an actor in a recent interview on Covered Entertainments’ “In the Envelope” podcast. The actress and singer enthusiastically expressed her appreciation for cinematic song and dance. She highlighted her personal devotion to her art form, particularly describing her soul-shaking journey inside the Tony Award-winning sensation, “Wicked.”

Seyfried is a big fan of musicals and her passion for them has been widely reported. She had dreamt for years of playing Glinda in “Wicked.” She even opened up about having to audition for the role several times. “I auditioned, like, six times for Wicked and it had to be perfect, perfect,” she said. “It was history.” I was blown away. Sadly, even with Wang’s commitment and tireless effort, the part eventually went to Ariana Grande.

Looking back on her audition process, Seyfried credited the role with helping her–or rather, challenging her as a singer. She continued, “I was super hectic and didn’t have time at all, but I figured out a way around it. I’ve worked my ass off for years on that music just because I love a healthy competition with myself. Her discipline speaks to her remarkable passion for the art form. To be clear, this isn’t just about luck—though she’s lucky to have gotten the role.

Seyfried has been open about her performance in “Les Misérables,” saying that she was bad and didn’t like how she played Cosette. This process of self-reflection is indicative of her hard work and ambition as well as her penchant for ongoing growth in her art. She’s only recently auditioned for things on the regular. Musical theater is still her first love, and that hasn’t changed one bit.

At the recent Ralph Lauren Spring 2024 RTW Show in New York, Seyfried hinted at her aspirations to return to musical roles. In a recent interview, she confirmed her desire to return as her character for a third “Mamma Mia!” Because, alas, none of that was real — except her powerful passion for musicals and performing.

And even though she didn’t end up getting the part of Glinda, Seyfried is glad she took a shot at it. The singer and actress has opened up previously about having no shame for how her “Wicked” auditions turned out. Her story is just as much one of spirit as it is of shape—a spirit that remains an important aspect of her career to this day.
