ABC News Suspends Veteran Correspondent Terry Moran After Controversial Social Media Post

In the meantime, ABC News has suspended veteran correspondent Terry Moran’s Twitter feed. His suspension comes after a late-night Twitter rant Friday in which he attacked President Donald Trump and senior advisor Stephen Miller. Moran has been with the network since 1997. For the last two decades, he’s penned some of the most detailed, authentic coverage of cataclysmic events—from the Iraq War to 9/11 to multiple presidential elections.

In April, Moran still managed to score a rare Oval Office interview with Trump that demonstrated his innovative, foundational approach to political journalism — 30 years on. His recent comments have sparked controversy. In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, he had described Miller as “a powerful agent of darkness” and “a man who is richly endowed with the capacity for hatred.” He denounced Trump as “a world-class hater.” The post was quickly deleted but not before it attracted a firestorm of commentary from fans and naysayers alike.

Former Congressman Doug Ose, now chairman of California’s Republican Party, called Moran’s comments a “rampage” against Trump and his administration. In response to this backlash, ABC News announced Moran’s suspension with the statement that the news organization is committed to objectivity and impartiality.

“ABC News stands for objectivity and impartiality in its news coverage and does not condone subjective personal attacks on others,” – ABC News spokesperson

The fallout from Moran’s post has continued beyond his short suspension. That’s why Karoline Leavitt, one of Trump’s former aides recently called those comments “unhinged and unacceptable.” She went on to lambast Moran’s credentials as a journalist, given his statements. She expressed concern about the integrity of the media, stating, “We have reached out to ABC to inquire about how they plan to hold Terry accountable.”

Moran’s career runs deep—well over two decades at ABC News—where he covered the most important national and international stories. In addition, his work was recently covered in Entertainment Weekly’s “Copy That!” newsletter, solidifying his impact and influence on the industry. Even for someone with the experience and resume of Bill Moyers, this incident calls into question the limits of journalistic free speech.
