A Royal Love Story: From University Friends to Family Life

Princess Kate and Prince William’s story goes beyond the usual royal fairytale, back to their time as students together at St Andrews University. Their journey from acquaintances to lifelong partners has captivated millions, culminating in a family that includes three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

The couple getting married today met first at Marlborough College. It was no wonder that Princess Kate had a special admiration for Prince William even back then. She fondly recalled her initial feelings when meeting him, stating, “Well, I actually think I went bright red when I met you and sort of scuttled off, feeling very shy about meeting you.” Their bond continued to grow during their years at St Andrews and was not immediate. Prince William’s absence during Fresher’s Week delayed their first introduction, and so their friendship was able to develop naturally.

Blossoming Friendship

As they adapted to a new life at university, Princess Kate and Prince William quickly became “very close friends from very early on.” They laughed a lot and found a shared love of dinosaurs that sealed their fast friendship. Reflecting on their early days together, Prince William noted, “We just spent more time with each other, had a good giggle, had lots of fun and realised we shared the same interests and just had a really good time.”

One thing we never really touched on much in the beginning days of engagement was how Princess Kate felt about Prince William. She candidly remarked, “I don’t like any of them… there’s no one quite like William. I bet he’s really kind. You can just tell by looking at him.” This mutual respect and admiration laid the foundation for a romantic relationship that continued to blossom through the decades.

A Proposal in Kenya

In 2010, when Prince William got engaged to Princess Kate while on vacation in Kenya. They had shared almost a decade of platonic friendship and romance while awaiting that moment. The proposal was a huge step in their long-distance romance and romantic history, but it foreshadowed their strong emotional bond. Their public spectacle of a wedding soon followed in 2011—held at Westminster Abbey, the royal wedding captivated an estimated 162 million viewers across the globe.

As a wedding gift, Queen Elizabeth II gave them the titles of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. This royal confirmation of their status stamped the mark of permanence. Secondly, it served to establish the parameters of their future public lives as ambassadors for the British monarchy.

Family Life and Personal Growth

As Prince William and Princess Kate entered into parenthood, Prince William opened up about the way having a family with Princess Kate changed him. He remarked, “I’m a lot more emotional than I used to be,” highlighting the profound impact that family life has had on his character. While romance is hardly absent from their lives, the couple’s commitment to each other and their children embodies the spirit of companionship from which their love story emerged.
