The FIFA World Cup 2026 Playoffs are set to determine the final two teams that will qualify for the much-anticipated tournament. This intercontinental playoff features six nations: Iraq, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Bolivia, New Caledonia, Jamaica, and Suriname. The playoffs will be played out in Mexico, with games most likely to Guadalajara and Monterrey.
The tournament opens with the four lowest-ranked sides – Bolivia, New Caledonia, Jamaica and Suriname. Their path to glory won’t be easy, as they will meet in two thrilling semifinal contests. The winners of the semifinals will meet in a final match. They will meet either the Democratic Republic of the Congo or Iraq, the two highest-ranked teams in the tournament, to earn a place at the World Cup.
Overview of the Teams
The DRC’s excellence makes them an exciting favorite in this playoff. Rated by FIFA as the 49th best team in the world and ninth-best in Africa, the DRC boasts a significant footballing legacy. Their most recent World Cup participation came in 1974 — back when they played as Zaire. The team aims to harness their recent successes in regional qualifying rounds against formidable opponents like Nigeria and Cameroon to achieve World Cup qualification.
Iraq is looking forward to returning to the World Cup for just the second time. Their last qualification came to the 1986 finals played on Mexican soil. Iraq’s footballing accolades were capped off with their Most Memorable Victory, the winning of the 2007 Arab Cup, which demonstrates their immense talent on the international stage.
The other four sides—Bolivia, New Caledonia, Jamaica, and Suriname—are looking to make their mark. In order to do that though, they will need to have an incredible showing in the semifinals. Imagine the difference they could make during this especially critical moment for them!
The Road Ahead
The FIFA Playoff Tournament format will feature six teams in a winner-take-all competition for one coveted World Cup spot. It’s going to be our biggest and best tournament to date! The tournament will be played during June and July in 2026. It will be the first time we see 48 nations compete all across Canada, Mexico and United States. With six other qualifying spots still to be determined, each match is extremely impactful.
The four semifinals will flare up a gritty war. Teams will battle tooth and nail to claim the ultimate prize, and hope to win to ultimately get the opportunity to wear their country’s colors on one of football’s largest stages. The DRC and Iraq each come to this tournament with their own beautiful stories and dreams. Their head to head might be the key factor in determining who makes it through.
