Assault in the West Bank: A Harrowing Account of Violence Against Palestinians

In a chilling incident that has drawn international attention, Qusai Abu al-Kebash, a Palestinian man from Khirbet Humsa in the West Bank, recounted his ordeal after being assaulted by a group of masked Israeli settlers. The attack occurred in the early hours of the morning when Abu al-Kebash and several family members were subjected to extreme violence, leaving them with physical injuries and psychological trauma.

On that fateful night, settler vigilantes stormed the village, there they pursued Abu al-Kebash and his family members. The group tied his hands and feet, removed his clothes, and severely physically tortured him. The assault specifically targeted Abu al-Kebash and his family. His consort, cousins, and dad were likewise shackled and brutally whipped around. The attack has raised immediate and pressing concerns for the safety and security of Palestinians who continue to live there.

Details of the Assault

The horrific particulars of the attack reveal a glaring pattern. This horrendous cycle of violence is the new normal in the area. Abu al-Kebash recounted how he was zip-tied in such a way that it produced intolerable pain.

“They cut my belt off with a knife, as well as my boxers. They zip-tied my penis, tightened it and then dragged me all around the village,” – Qusai Abu al-Kebash.

Witnesses to the event included two foreign activists: a 24-year-old American and a 25-year-old Portuguese woman. Both gave detailed testimony confirming Abu al-Kebash’s account of the attack. The American suffragist wrote of her shock with the unfolding events, writing,

“I honestly thought I was going to die,” – 24-year-old American activist.

The activists described witnessing the brutality of Abu al-Kebash’s punishment, finding him cowering in a fetal position, crying out as he suffered the vicious assault. The Portuguese activist’s account of the scene was “absolutely harrowing,” amplifying the severity of the violence.

Immediate Aftermath and Hospitalization

Immediately after the attack, Abu al-Kebash and six of his extended family needed medical attention, with some sustaining critical injuries. Abu al-Kebash continues to experience debilitating physical pain in addition to severe psychological trauma. Ever since the accident, he hasn’t been able to sleep at all.

“I felt humiliated and insulted. Why would they do that to us? Why do they tie someone up like that?” – Qusai Abu al-Kebash.

This incident, unfortunately, isn’t an outlier. It illustrates the escalating violence in the West Bank, where Palestinian families are continuously faced with aggression from settlers as well as state violence. Abu al-Kebash’s family has already suffered displacement multiple times due to Israeli government demolitions. Yet today, they continue to live in fear of displacement all over again.

Flickers of hope were raised at the news of thefts reports by settlers of hundreds of sheep from Abu al-Kebash’s family. This theft intensified an already charged and hostile climate. His alarm over potential attacks yet to come is something you can hear in his voice, as he explained,

“I’m worried they’ll come back, that they’ll kill us in the middle of the night or burn our village like they said they would,” – Qusai Abu al-Kebash.

Official Response and Ongoing Investigation

Held Israeli authorities responded to the incident by immediately arresting seven suspects. They are telling you that these new people were responsible for the attack. In response, the Israel Police published a statement expressing their determination to keep the area secure and public order restored.

“The investigation is ongoing, led by the Israel Police in cooperation with security forces,” – Israeli police.

Second, they denounced violence and criminality while stressing that they would continue to defend their residents from such actions. Nevertheless, most residents are still doubtful that these steps are truly effective, especially in light of the regular news of new violence enacted upon Palestinians.

This past spring, Abu al-Kebash made the courageous decision to go public with his experience. He hopes to continue advocating for transparency and bringing attention to the oppression and helplessness of Palestinians. He articulated his motivation clearly:

“I’m sharing my story in its entirety so people can see — so the world can see what’s happening. We haven’t done anything to them, and yet they came and beat us and did this to us,” – Qusai Abu al-Kebash.

A Broader Context

The violence that Qusai Abu al-Kebash endured is part and parcel of a larger reality for Palestinians living under Israeli occupation. Reports of settler violence have increased in recent years, contributing to an environment of fear and insecurity among local populations.

Activists and human rights organizations have kept a close eye on these incidents, pushing for justice and accountability. The desperate situation of leavetakers such as the Abu al-Kebash family is a powerful testament to the damage done by the ongoing conflict and its toll on lives.
