Iranian-backed militias have announced responsibility for a continuing second wave of attacks on Israel. They claim that what they are doing helps Tehran in light of increased regional tensions. This comes a day after the reported death of Iran’s feared security chief, Ali Larijani. According to these reports, an Israeli strike is to blame for his killing. In response, Iranian officials promised a crushing response, increasing anxiety of wider war in an already tense region.
On March 17, 2026, Iran’s military leadership made clear its intentions following Larijani’s death. General Amir Hatami stated that the blood of “this exalted martyr and other esteemed martyrs will be avenged.” In July 2021, he threatened that Iran’s response would be “decisive and regrettable,” foreshadowing a further escalation towards military strikes.
Iran’s General Ali Abdollahi warned US President Donald Trump, stating that he “must wait for our surprises,” and promised that the armed forces’ response would be “more devastating than the actions and imagination of the enemy.” This comment is very much in line with the increased bluster and belligerent behavior that Iranian leaders have recently exhibited amidst a growing clash.
Not surprisingly, the contentious status quo has pulled other regional nations into the fray with forceful responses of their own. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Thursday claimed that its air defense systems intercepted missile and drone threats from Iran overnight. Bahrain’s Ministry of Defense announced that two Iranian drones hit the country. This attack underscores the growing reach of military operations associated with Iranian forces.
Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defense announced successful interception of a missile aimed at the Al-Kharj Governorate, showcasing the direct threats posed by Iran’s military capabilities. Reports indicate that Israel has intercepted a new barrage of missiles launched from Iran, intensifying military engagements between these nations.
In a very visible show of strength, the US conducted precision airstrikes against the missile sites. The strait is one of the world’s most strategically important chokepoints. The strikes included the use of 5,000-pound guided bombs, justified as necessary to prevent Iranian missiles from being developed and launched against U.S. forces.
The humanitarian situation continues to be catastrophic with more than one million people having fled from the flames of the new and vicious conflict. Thousands of families like Yasser’s are now sleeping outside or in temporary shelters on the streets of Beirut. The Lebanese government has been facing an unprecedented crisis. Israel has escalated airstrikes throughout Lebanon, causing multiple evacuation orders to deepen suffering for hundreds of thousands of civilians.
An estimated 700 to 1,000 trucks a day ply the route between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. They are providing food and medical supplies to those caught up in the conflict. This lifeline is even more critical as access through the Strait of Hormuz is still almost completely shut off.
As these trends play out, the potential for military conflict between Iran and Israel appears likely to persist. The international community eats these developments flush, knowing that a single misstep—by any party—might lead us all into a much larger regional war.
“These actions will not rescue the feeble enemy from the quagmire in which it is trapped; rather, they will accelerate the course of its defeat and humiliation.” – Saeed Jalili
