Major Overhaul for African Football as AFCON Shifts to Four-Year Cycle

Patrice Motsepe, president of Confederation of African Football (CAF) news conference والمتفرغ There, he declared AFCON’s drastic changes a philanthropic success. Beginning in 2028, the AFCON will move to a four-year cycle. Finally, another African Champions League-style competition, the African Nations League, will be introduced.

Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania will all be ready to proudly co-host this exciting new tournament. The next edition, which was to have been held in 2029, will instead happen in 2028. This last minute change lays the ground for a second consecutive AFCON tournament in 2032.

Motsepe emphasized the intention behind these changes, stating, “What is new is that … in Africa there’s going to be a competition every year where the best African players who play in Europe and worldwide will be with us on the continent.” This change increases the competitiveness of African football. It opens up more chances for local fans to get an up-close look at the top-tier talent.

A newly created African Nations League will start in 2029. This competition would include every one of CAF’s 54 member countries, separated into four geographic zones. League matches are intended to take place in September and October, with finals to be played in November.

As it stands that could be before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Morocco was chosen as the host country for that tournament. The introduction of the African Nations League will further increase competition across the continent. It hopes to raise the international standing of African football.
