UFC fighter Ilia Topuria, 28, has been in the news lately because of his side-eye inducing withdrawal from UFC 324. Since joining the UFC, Topuria has established a reputation as one of the most dangerous players. He happens to be the reigning champion in both the flyweight and lightweight divisions. He was the first ever UFC fighter to be named pound-for-pound best fighter in the world. On top of that, he is widely regarded as the first undefeated two-division champion in UFC history. His most recent success was a knockout victory over Charles Oliveira at UFC 317 on June 28. As a result of this victory, he made the first defense of his interim lightweight title.
Even with Topuria’s growing success, his life outside the octagon has posed other major challenges. He disclosed that he was subjected to extreme and inexcusable pressure. This extended to threats to publicly false-flag him for domestic violence if his monetary terms weren’t fulfilled. These false accusations have cut to the core and, in turn, he has doubled down in his response healing the harm.
“In recent months, I have been subjected to severe and unacceptable pressure, including threats to disseminate false allegations of domestic abuse unless financial demands were met. These allegations are entirely unfounded. The truth is not a matter of opinion – it is a matter of evidence,” – Ilia Topuria
To protect his personal integrity and family, Topuria made the difficult decision to step back from competition for the time being. He argued that this decision was not taken lightly but was required in light of the circumstances that were endangering his hard-earned reputation.
“Over the past several weeks, I have made the difficult decision to temporarily step away from defending my title. This was not a decision I took lightly. However, when circumstances arise that threaten your personal integrity, your family, and your reputation, there comes a point when you must address them directly,” – Ilia Topuria
The professional mixed martial artist has since moved to combat these attacks legally, maintaining and documenting all evidence supporting his claims. He’s compiled audio tapes, written letters, affidavits, and video evidence. He intends to take this evidence to judicial authorities where he’ll seek legal action against those attempting to extort him.
